Autumn Budget 2026: What It Means for Business Fuel Costs

Diesel has crossed a line many businesses hoped never to see. In early October, the average price of a litre of diesel in the UK passed £2 for the first time, according to the RAC, beating the previous record set in June 2022.
For any business that runs vans, lorries or company cars, that is a significant jump in running costs. Here is what is behind the rise, what it means for fleets and the practical steps you can take to keep fuel spend under control.
The main driver is the global oil market. Conflict in the Middle East has put pressure on oil supplies through 2026, pushing up the wholesale cost of fuel. Diesel has been hit harder than petrol, and the International Energy Agency has warned the diesel supply squeeze could last well into 2027.
Tax is also part of the picture. Fuel duty is currently 52.95p a litre, with VAT added on top. A rise to 55.95p is due on 1 January 2027 under current law, and the Chancellor is expected to confirm the final rate in the Autumn Budget on 28 October.
For businesses that rely on diesel, the impact is immediate. The Road Haulage Association says operators are paying around £350 more per truck every week than they were in February, when diesel was around 142p a litre.
Smaller fleets feel it too. A van covering high mileage can easily add hundreds of pounds a month to fuel costs at these prices. And many businesses work on fixed-price contracts, so they cannot always pass rising costs on to customers straight away.
When prices move quickly, certainty matters. Fuel cards with weekly fixed prices let you know exactly what you will pay per litre for the week ahead, making it far easier to budget and price jobs.
Some fuel cards give access to wholesale diesel prices, which can be lower than standard pump prices. For diesel-heavy fleets, even a small saving per litre adds up quickly. Compare options on our diesel fuel cards page.
Motorway service stations are usually among the most expensive places to refuel. Choosing a card with a strong network on your drivers’ routes means they can fill up at better-priced sites without detours. Use our site locator to check coverage.
Since February 2026, fuel retailers have had to publish their prices through the government’s Fuel Finder scheme. Apps and websites using this data make it easier for drivers to see prices before they stop.
Every litre counts at £2. PIN-protected fuel cards with spending limits help prevent misuse and make unusual spending easy to spot. Read more about the security benefits of fuel cards.
Planning routes to cut unnecessary miles, reducing idling and keeping tyres correctly inflated can all improve fuel economy. Small changes across a fleet can make a noticeable difference.
If your business already has a fuel card, check you are still on the best deal for how you operate today. Networks, pricing and fees vary, and a card that suited you a year ago may not be the best fit now. See our guide to the best fuel cards.
Nobody can say for certain. Prices depend largely on global oil markets, and supply pressures could continue into 2027. The Autumn Budget will also confirm whether fuel duty rises in January. With so much uncertainty, the most effective thing businesses can do is focus on what they can control: how they buy fuel, where drivers refuel and how efficiently vehicles are run.
